Visual two-column layouts look modern on paper and in PDF previews. Many applicant tracking systems still read left-to-right and top-to-bottom. Sidebars, tables, and floated columns frequently get scrambled or dropped.
What goes wrong
Skills or contact info in a left sidebar can appear after experience or vanish from extracted text.
Tables used for layout often parse as one jumbled cell or out of order.
Text boxes and floating elements are unreliable across parsers.
Some systems show the recruiter a flattened version that no longer matches what you designed.
When two columns are less risky
You are emailing a hiring manager directly or applying outside a portal.
The posting asks for a designed portfolio-style PDF and you know a human will open it first.
You keep a clean single-column DOCX or text-based PDF as the primary upload for every ATS portal.
Practical approach
Maintain one master single-column resume with standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills).
Put critical facts in the main body, not in sidebars or headers/footers.
After upload, open the application preview or autofilled fields and fix anything the parser misread.
Save the polished two-column version for networking, referrals, and direct email.
